Today I’m sharing my business planning & goal setting system that never fails.
This is the system I personally use, all our members inside the AVENUE programs use, and I recommend to anyone who’s serious about getting a lot of things done, and not wasting time on procrastination.

We always start with big visions. When we design our lives and businesses, we must look all the way to the horizon – to see what’s possible, and where we want to do. This practice will also set your intentions; so that you know what you want to build, and why.
Visions & intentions
- What do you see yourself doing in 10 years time?
- How does your life look like?
- How does your business operate?
Start drafting your visions and intentions. You can use vision boards like I do, either virtual or physical. I have a physical vision board in my office, and I look at it every day. That keeps me focused.
You know, creative minds have so many tabs open all the time, and we sometimes find it so difficult to focus on the tasks at hand. New ideas pop up all the time, and many times we end up having too many things we want to do, leaving no real progress on the things we need to do.
That’s why I always incorporate creative days into my work schedule! It’s the days when I think, a lot. And write down wild ideas. And I got many of those…
The first tier of business goals is the coming 5 years. I make plans for the coming 5 years, and now it’s time to get very specific.
- The revenue goals
- The products to launch
- The markets to go to
- The operations such as marketing, sales and PR
- The technology plan
The next tier is 1-year plans. I don’t add any new ones at this stage, I just look at my 5-year goals and decide the PRIORITY for those goals. I plan…

- My plan of action: how to get to the revenue goal
I break down my total revenue goal to 12 months, and then plan the marketing activities to get to that goal.
The 3rd tier is my next 90 days, which is all about goals. Now things get very specific and measured.
I start every 90 day period with a creative workshop. This is the 1-2 days when I allow myself to dream big. I need these workshops every 90 days because if I don’t have them, I end up dreaming and making wild plans a little too often… so these days are like chocolate: overdose with pleasure but not too often.
Now that I have a lot of great ideas; some new, some old, I add them to the right places:
- What goes to 3-year plan.
- What goes to 1-year plan.
- And what of those 1-year plans end up on my to-do list RIGHT NOW. This is the list that I start working on.
The ONE big goal for the coming 90 days. This is ALWAYS a revenue-generating goal. If nothing else happens, this goal must get done.
Then I go through the different areas of my business; the OPERATIVE PLAN:
- Marketing & Sales
- Admin & back office
And I make up to 5 goals, one per each. Not every 90 day period consist of an event or a new product, but it can also be about planning for an event that’s outside of this 90 days. Like trade fairs when I used to do those! Today, I own a few online conferences, so those need a bit of planning.
Everything must fit into the coming 90 days. If it doesn’t fit (like a coming event that’s 6 months away), then I break down that planning to 2 separate 90-day periods. In this way, I get to measure everything that goes into my 90-day plan.
Then I break these goals to tasks. Now, I have prioritized the goals, and know what specific tasks take me to my goals.
It’s time to add them to my planner and balance out my months.
Now I’m clear about my tasks for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd months.
Each week I will go through the following routine:
On SUNDAYS: I plan my coming week. I schedule the calls, and client work. Then I look at my tasks and add them to my planner.
On FRIDAYS: Before I check out, I go through my week and respond to these simple questions:
- what got done
- what should I get done the coming week
- any thoughts about this week
I also go through the questions I have in my planner; they summarize the week really well!
I batch things, that means that I don’t ever multitask (at least I try not to… some days get a wee bit crazy so some multitasking might happen. However, I have also noticed that those days don’t FEEL good, even though I get a lot of things done)
I always start my weeks with the most important things: as a mother of 2 little ones, I know that things outside of my control happen and they usually ‘happen’ from Wednesday forward 😉
HERE’S MY DAILY ROUTINE
05.00 I get up, make coffee and read something. Kids get up too so we make breakfast and just take it easy. I might write something, like this post. I check our social channels and emails.
07.30 I drop off the kids
07.45 – 08.15 I’m at the gym
09.00 Ready to work!
14.30 Stop working and start summarizing the day. I also respond to the emails that I received during the day.
15.30 Pick up the kids
This is how I and our members inside our programs get so much done.
Your plan is not important, it will change. But having a well-structured PLANNING PROCESS is what gets you results.
